Defence/prosecution counsel (barrister), is the UK term for defence/prosecution attorney/lawyer. They are usually retained by solicitors on behalf of their client (in the UK we have a distinction between solicitors and barristers). In this case, Hudson (reluctantly) is having to do the retaining because nobody else wishes to get involved!
