The "flashback device" is what Anderson/Vader did to Hudson in episode #74 (complete with swirly effects, hence not being suitable for the Chief while he's recovering) and the "narrated back-story" is what Khan gave DCI Semaphore in episode #151 (first discussed in episode #119) - it takes far too long for visiting time. Which is why it is convenient for Chief Texas and us that Anderson kept a journal of his adventures!
