Episode Notes

The background photo of the spiral galaxy (catchily named "NGC 4414") comes from a really cool NASA resource of public domain images: NSSDC Photo Gallery. The galaxy is 19.1 megaparsecs (about 60 million light-years) distant from our solar system.

Obviously, the use of their photo doesn't imply that NASA endorse this comic or website, etc... etc... blah... blah... you know the rest.

Spacedude:
Galaxy Explorer LL928? That's not very original.
Narrator:
What would you suggest?
Spacedude:
I like the Galaxy Liberator Nostromo Millennium Falcon Enterprise Voyager!
Narrator:
Let go with the Galaxy Voyager.
Panel 2:
Narrator:
"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Galaxy Voyager. its five year mission--
Spacedude:
Five years? My contract is for two
Narrator:
"--its two year mission: to--
Spacedude:
But what happens if the contract gets extended and the mission lasts longer than originally planned?
Narrator:
"-- its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds; To seek out new life and new civilisations; to boldly go where no man has gone before."
Panel 3:
Spacedude:
Then what? We land on a planet, say "nice world, very strange and new", and just leave? What about trading in cool weapons, doling out vigilante justice, and dating sexy aliens with antennae in intriguing places.
Narrator:
Well, um, that's not what we're going for...
Spacedude:
Also, is space the final frontier? Surely death is the final frontier from whence there is no return?
And what about the unexplored ocean depths? Space is possibly the antepenultimate at the very most.
Narrator:
{Sigh} Space, the--
Spacedude:
Here, let me do it...
Panel 4:
Spacedude:
"Space, possibly the antepenultimate frontier. These are the adventures of the Galaxy Voyager.
"its open-ended mission: to roam the galaxy looking for strange sexy aliens;
"to seek out new weapons and new financial opportunities;
"to go with reckless charm where no being could be bothered to go before."
Panel 5: The Narrator is holding a red spacesuit top in front of the Spacedude.
Narrator:
Ok, that's enough! it's not too late to make you a red shirt!
