Episodes now with transcripts

Posted: 1 month ago

I've started adding transcripts to comics. Currently only new comics will have transcripts, but gradually I'll add transcripts to the archives. You can choose to "Show" or "Hide" transcripts, which will save a cookie to your browser ("Show stores the cookie, "Hide" deletes it). Transscripts are visible on the episode pages (permalinks) only, and not on the home page.

The robot special guest stars are thanks to Peter Reid. Check out Pete's (legoloverman) Flickr account for more Robots and Classic Space inspired vehicles.

I love the little Blips, and I knew they'd be a handful of trouble for Tranquility Base.

I am rather proud of the fireball effect in the third panel and the charred, smoking, Blip in the fourth. No LEGO was harmed in the making of this episode.

The references in this episode are obviously Isaac Asimov and his laws of robotics. Most people know the original "Three Laws of Robotics":

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law

In later robot stories the Zeroth Law was formulated by the robot character R. Daneel Olivaw, superseding the above It states that:

A robot may not harm humanity, or, by inaction, allow humanity to come to harm

As you can see, none of these laws prevent robots damaging each other, which could cause problems if they are supposed to be working together.

Actually the third law could keep robots from hurting each other, (assuming the involved robots would fight back) because if the first one damaged the second, the second (or it's friends) would attack the first, damaging it as well. Therefore, to avoid all chance of damage, the first robot must not hurt other robots.

That is true, although it implies deliberate harm -- the blip in this strip accidentally shot his blaster. Or did he? Consideringthe events of Volume III...

    Here's the promised correction.....

Panel four, first speech bubble - replace "forgot" with "forget".
