This is Classic Space set 6970, Beta I Command Base, it came in the same 1980s second-hand lot as the 920 rocket launch pad, so I've had it since I was a child. It even has the aerial and flag -- except the clumsy, careless, no-good, little snot of a kid who owned it before me, stuck the sticker on upside down!

Major Tom comes from the City Spaceport (I don't know which set, I purchased him from BrickLink) - he's an American Major seconded to Tranquility Base. Although he outranks the Captain in charge (we'll meet him later), he doesn't actually have an say in the running of the base. If this isn't how things would work in the real world -- well, let's just say the rules changed over the centuries since our time.

This whole episode is an excuse for the David Bowie "Space Oddity" reference. Yes, "trash can" is an Americanism; but, as I said, Major Tom is an American. Besides, "here I am, sitting on a rubbish bin" isn't funny (I heard that, who just said "it's not funny as it is"?).

The photography has improved here.
